Future Geek & Continuing Cold

Zoë is still sick. She wakes up in the morning with snot encrusted on her upper lip (how attractive is that?), she's got a bit of a cough, seems to have a lot of body aches and the fever comes and goes. She seems to have decided that taking her medicine isn't such a bad thing (most of the time), so that's a bit of an improvement.

I have the cold, too. I'm going to the doctor in about half an hour because the sore throat has gotten quite severe and I don't want to take any chances. In other words, I definitely sympathise with Zoë, because I know exactly how awful she feels.

On lighter matters, I got a big giggle from reading Top 45 Signs that your Pre-Schooler is a Future Geek.

Still not well

Zoë has a stuffy and/or runny nose now, in addition to the fever and irritability.

It's just a cold. I know because I have it now, too. Mine's not as bad as hers, probably because I'm a grownup and I'm better able to handle a cold, but I do have a headache and aching neck and back, a bit of a sore throat, and a very stuffy head. I feel even more sympathetic toward Zoë now!

Sick little girl

We took the girl to the doctor today. Her fever was quite high this morning, so we called immediately and got in early in the afternoon. Her ears look fine, but her throat is quite red and sore and she's got some chest congestion. She's been put on antibiotics (Keflex) and the doctor told us to keep her on the children's ibuprofen for the fever. Hopefully, this will clear it up fairly quickly. There's nothing more pathetic than a sick toddler.

Not well

Zoë's not feeling well. When she woke up, she had a bit of a cough, a sort of "chest congestion" type noise. She also felt a bit warm to me, but not warm enough that I thought to take her temperature. We went out and ran errands today, and when we got back she had a nap. When she woke up, she definitely had a fever. It's a moderately high one (nothing to worry about yet), so we gave her some children's ibuprofen (which works up to eight hours, and yes, ibuprofen is a fever reducer). For a while before we gave her the medicine and a while before it took effect, she wanted to do what she always does when she's sick: lie on my chest with her head on my breast and watch television.

If the fever's still high tomorrow, we'll make an appointment with the doctor, but since a slight cough and the fever are the only symptoms, I don't expect there will be much the doctor can do. Still, it's good to check for sore throat or ear infections. I just always feel bad when she's not well. Poor little pathetic girly.

New tooth

Zoë's got a new tooth, one of the lower bicuspids. I don't know when it came in because those teeth aren't as noticible as the front ones, but I noticed it a couple of days ago and just haven't mentioned it (naughty me).

We left her with Nanna for a while today while we went out and when we came back, I was standing in the kitchen talking and here comes my toddler girl walking as fast as she could, with a huge grin on her face because she was happy to see me. What a lovely experience that is!

Teeth and Streets

Friday night, Zoë did the Toddler Head Butt and managed to literally knock one of my teeth out of place. My teeth are a bit crooked, and my front right incisor is a bit farther forward than the left. Zoë hit that tooth so hard it was flush with the one next to it and there was a trickle of blood between them. Thankfully, the tooth moved back to its normal placement naturally and while it's still a bit tender, it seems to be okay. Thank goodness she didn't knock it out.

And, of course, she got a bruise on her forehead from it. So far it's not too bad, but we may have to reschedule the photo sitting next week if it gets worse. *sigh*

In other matters, Saturday Zoë had her first walk along a Melbourne city street. By "walk" I mean that she was walking. I pushed the stroller, which was carrying a fairly bulky purchase we had made, while Zoë walked along holding her Daddy's hand and having a great time. She walked a surprising distance! She did fall down once, but she laughed over it, so I guess it was funny to her in some way. It's amazing how well she can walk these days, it really is.

When we shared this with her Uncle Greg (who we saw for coffee in the afternoon), he asked which street it was. I told him "Elizabeth Street," and he said, "That's oddly appropriate, isn't it?" Yeah, I thought so, too.

Piccies and such

We finally made an appointment to get Zoë's portrait done. She keeps falling down and bruising her face (usually her forehead). She has a little bruise at the moment, but I'm hoping it'll be gone by Tuesday afternoon (wanna see? here's a picture I took just today). With any luck at all, she'll not get any more on her face until after the portraits. I hope. *crosses fingers*

Toddler Nudist

Zoë has been taking her socks off pretty much forever (she used to kick them off or push them off with the opposite foot, and moved on to pulling them off). Then she moved on to taking the shoes off (so the socks could come off). Then her pants. Last night, she finally managed to get her shirt off.

We've got a toddler nudist on our hands, I think (although she does generally leave her nappy alone, she's taken it off at least once).

Immunization & teeth

Zoë got immunizations today, and she wasn't the least bit happy about it. The balloon the doctor gave her afterward was a nice diversion, but she still had a fit over the shots, and I can't say I really blame her. Thankfully, she's only got one more round of immunizations and then we get several years off.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but she's got two new teeth. I'm not sure when the first upper canine (or bicuspid, I guess) came in, but one day, there it was. Then, in the past couple of days, the matching one on the other side came in. So now she's got ten teeth!

We also talked to the doctor a bit about the fact that Zoë won't eat anything that looks like vegetables (other than potatoes, and only in the form of fries or wedges). Basically, there's not much we can do, and so long as she's still eating reasonably well (and she does eat fruit regularly), she'll get through it in time.

Journal change and portrait sittings

I've switched this log over to using Greymatter. There may be a few bugs for a bit while I make sure everything is running the way I want, but for now, it all seems to be working.

As for the real subject of this log, we've been wanting to take her to get formal portaits for a while now. Unfortunately, she seems to have an uncanny knack for falling down and bruising some very visible part of her face. Through most of June she had a big fat bruise on her forehead (from falling forward onto a wooden toy), and just as that cleared up, she fell down a couple of days ago and hit her forehead on the floor (she had something in each hand, as she often does while she zooms around the house, and she couldn't catch herself when she fell). I put ice on it right away (which she hated), and it seems to be healing pretty well.

Perhaps sometime in the near future we might actually be able to get those pictures done...
